About Elom Initiatives:
Education, Empowerment and Advocacy
Elom Initiatives is a refugee-led, not-for-profit community organisation active in Kuala Lumpur since 2017. We empower refugees and stateless children and young people through education, youth development, community engagement and advocacy, helping them live with dignity and become confident, contributing members of society.
Our core programme, Elom Academy, provides structured, quality education to children who would otherwise have little or no access to schooling. Serving primarily refugee communities from Myanmar, the academy supports 162 children across 11 classes, from kindergarten to Grade 9. We strengthen teaching through ongoing training and provide paid teaching assistant internships for senior students, creating opportunities for practical learning and leadership.
Beyond the classroom, we support young people through mentoring, leadership development and cultural activities that build confidence, skills and a sense of belonging. Our community events bring together refugee families, teachers, volunteers and local residents, strengthening relationships and mutual understanding.
Storytelling and advocacy are also central to our work. We raise awareness of refugee experiences through film, personal stories and public dialogue, helping communities understand the challenges refugees face and recognise their contributions. Elom’s co-founder and director, Sujauddin Karimuddin, is a co-producer of Lost Land, a feature film that brings Rohingya experiences to wider audiences.
Through these connected efforts, Elom works to break the cycle of exclusion and create opportunities for refugees and stateless people to learn, participate and shape their own futures.
