This is a grassroots movement dedicated to protecting communities, wildlife, and the environment from the harmful effects of the current fire ant eradication strategy. The campaign advocates for safer, more sustainable alternatives that respect property rights and prioritise public health. In partnership with Australian Advocacy Group, the movement aims to raise awareness about the dangers of toxic pesticides used in the program and push for reforms that focus on targeted fire ant control and ecological solutions. Together, they are calling for an end to the use of harmful chemical poisons and the adoption of more effective, environmentally conscious approaches.
FATA was started by Sarah McGuire, a mother of two. She is an accountant and piano teacher who moved from the UK to Australia in 2003. Sarah has always loved animals and spent time volunteering at the RSPCA. One of her favourite things about living in Samford is walking by the creeks with friends and family, enjoying the natural surroundings. Her connection to nature and focus on a low-toxicity lifestyle play an important role in her everyday life.
Sarah is passionate about providing her family with organic, healthy food and takes pride in growing her own fruits and vegetables. So, when helicopters began dropping toxic pesticides over her community in May last year, she felt outraged and violated. Her sanctuary, her home, and the wildlife she treasures were all at risk. She quickly recognised this wasn’t just a personal issue but a broader threat to her community and the environment.
Disturbed by how the fire ant eradication program removed her choice to live according to her values, Sarah is determined to protect her family, her community, and the environment. She has created a team of people campaigning for urgent reforms and advocating for more sustainable, rational solutions.
