A museum is more than just a collection of exhibits and displays. It is a place of research and wānanga. It is a place where objects and archives, art and artefacts are stored and cared for. Hawke's Bay Museum operates from two separate buildings in two different cities. In Ahuriri Napier, Kahukura Hawke's Bay Museum exhibits art and objects from the Hawke's Bay Collection. In Heretaunga Hastings, Amokura Hawke's Bay Museum is the storage, archive and research facility that protects and preserves the Collection. Of the 90,000 items held, only a small fraction feature in Kahukura at any one time, depending on the stories being told and the exhibition on display.
