hexxer is the solo alternative-rock project of New Zealand musician Samuel Butler. Originally from Ōtautahi (Christchurch), Butler has been developing hexxer since 2024, releasing four singles and performing across the Ōtautahi music scene.
Now based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), hexxer has become part of the city's independent music community, with a live lineup featuring Hayden Lam, Max Ware and Moses Buda.
At the centre of hexxer's music are themes that are both personal and political, with songs exploring war, love and addiction. Sonically, the project balances weight with clarity, drawing on alternative rock, experimental songwriting and elements of jazz. Gritty chord progressions, dynamic arrangements and confronting melodies give the music its intensity, while jazz-influenced harmonic and rhythmic elements add a sense of unpredictability and movement.
The project's musical influences span alternative, experimental and jazz-influenced songwriting, with Butler citing Half/Angel, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Felix Bird, Jeff Buckley, Elly May and Cocteau Twins among his influences. Alongside the music, hexxer has developed a distinct visual identity influenced by sigil imagery.
All hexxer material is written, recorded, mixed and mastered by Samuel Butler.
