The Kumutoto Restoration Project is dedicated to the revitalisation of the Kumutoto awa/stream and ngahere/forest. This wāhi tūpuna site was once home to Ngāti Mutunga/Te Āti Āwa papakāinga. Today only 3% of this culturally and historically significant awa remains above ground and the once thriving forest has been reduced to 3 hectares, with the Wellington Urban Motorway built directly through the centre of it. Our 100 year vision is to restore the mana and mouri of this important urban space through wānanga, education and community engagement.
