KURAWAKA Limited
Kurawaka Limited, under the leadership of Piri Galbraith, integrates extensive cultural expertise with a team who provide supportive environments for wāhine, whānau and beyond. Kurawaka aim to reawaken, educate, realign and empower the reclamation of our primordial voice through practices such as te reo karanga, pūrākau and an understanding of our traditional practices, tikanga tuku iho. We uplift and empower te tū tamawahine me te tū tamatāne, through cultural practices and ensure we have strong connections and understandings of these roles.
Kurawaka Retreat Centre, nestled in Pōrangahau, has served as a significant gathering place for wāhine across Aotearoa seeking to enhance their mātauranga Māori in the art of te reo karanga—a vital aspect of tikanga tuku iho for wāhine and tangata whenua of Aotearoa. With guidance from our Māreikura Te Raina Ferris, who has imparted knowledge of this important discipline to thousands of wāhine over the past 25 years, the symposium builds upon previous successful events held in Hastings and Auckland. This year, the kaupapa will be brought to the Gold Coast, Australia, for the first time in response to widespread interest. Our principal objective is to empower and support paekaranga on every marae. We encourage all wāhine to participate and contribute to this kaupapa.
