Mal has an enormous number of outdoor adventures and endurance challenges to his name, acquired through fifty years of exploring mountains and wild places in New Zealand, the UK, USA and other more exotic places such as Nepal, Bhutan and South America. These have mostly been undertaken on foot - either running or hiking - but started when he was an unemployed graduate cycling from London to Lisbon in 1982.
Since 2009 Mal's projects have raised very close to $1,000,000 for charity and he continues to give his time to causes that are close to his heart.
He is a published author, has given countless motivational talks and has also dabbled in filmmaking. He publishes short format pieces on his Substack page.
Reflecting Mal's long-term love affair with the NZ backcountry, he has recently teamed up with the Backcountry Trust to volunteer on projects and to raise much needed funds that will support their invaluable work going forward.
