Maracatu Estrela do Mar is a Melbourne-based Afro-Brazilian percussion group that plays Maracatu de Baque Virado and other rhythms from the north-east of Brazil*. Translated to English as Star Fish, our name came from a famous Estrela Brilhante song called: Horizonte.
We think of the starfish as an inspiration for the culture and influences that have traveled from Africa to Brazil and onwards to Australia and beyond. We are proud to represent such a rich culture here.
We teach rhythm, song & movement at regular workshops. Our style is traced through the lineage of groups (or "nations") such as Maracatu Estrela Brilhante, Maracatu Leão Coroado, Maracatu Porto Rico, and others. We share a living tradition of maracatu in a local context – not a folkloric representation – so that we can also promote inclusion, break cultural barriers and facilitate social engagement.
