Imagine a dark sky, stars sparkling on a clear night. By scattering singers throughout the space while they repeat musical phrases at different times, the twinkling stars in the night sky of Karin Rehnqvist’s Night Over Earth come alive for the audience.
Imagine a choral piece accompanied by tuned water glasses, their shimmering sound lingering in the acoustic of the space.
Imagine sitting in a candlelit space listening to the close harmonies of an Arvo Pärt work as notes weave their way along each melodic line.
Imagine a Norwegian composer who, as a youngster, went into the hills around her village and sang to the mountains and heard her musical phrases returned in successive echos. Her composition, Sol Lokk, captures this, with a soprano soloist in front and five voices echoing her melodies at different intervals and from different vantage points in the Cathedral.
The effect is visceral. It’s engaging. It’s a completely different way to hear choral music.
Imagine the possibilities….music in 3-dimensions
