The Rere ki uta rere ki tai - Living Soil Project is a collaborative, farmer-led initiative exploring how farming systems that enhance the mana and mauri of soil can improve productivity, profitability, and environmental outcomes.
As the flagship project of the Rere ki uta rere ki tai Incorporated Society, it brings together mātauranga Māori, farmer knowledge, and science to take a whole-of-system approach, connecting soil, plant, animal, and human health.
Delivered in partnership with AgriSea, the contracted delivery partner for the MPI-funded programme, the project supports farmers in trialling and implementing practical system change.
Across farms in Waikato and Bay of Plenty, this includes reducing synthetic inputs, introducing biological inputs, establishing diverse pastures, and improving soil health. Early results are showing positive trends in production, nitrogen reduction, and greenhouse gas emissions efficiency.
Through on-farm days and shared learnings, the project aims to support more resilient, future-focused farming systems.
