Simon Leake is SESL Australia’s founding Director of Science, establishing the business in 1984 with a mission to apply soil science to real-world challenges. A Certified Practicing Soil Scientist and expert witness, Simon is renowned for his work in soil and vegetation rehabilitation across mine sites, urban renewal projects, and legal matters involving soil, waste, and composting.
Simon is a trusted mentor to the SESL team, guiding the objective use of soil science to achieve practical solutions for clients. His contributions to the field include co-authoring Soils for Landscape Development, published by CSIRO—a cornerstone reference for designing soil and growing media in landscape architecture and construction.
A passionate educator, Simon frequently lectures at leading institutions such as UTS, UNSW, the University of Sydney, TAFE Ryde, and Western Sydney University's Hawkesbury Campus. His expertise spans urban soil science, tree rootzone management, turf systems, pedology, soil chemistry, plant nutrition, and more.
Simon is also a familiar face and voice to the broader public, having appeared on Burke’s Backyard, ABC Radio, and other media outlets. Whether addressing professional audiences or gardening enthusiasts, Simon brings deep knowledge and an infectious enthusiasm for the science of soil.
