SJ Blake

Sarah-Jane is an experimental artist, performance designer and deviser. She has spent a lot of time living and working afloat and the ocean is present in much of her work. She is interested in experimenting with different mixes of media- new technologies (digital) and (hand made)-to create new aesthetics, meanings or emotional curiosities. Drawn towards false facades, the grotesque, fairground rides, games and play, her work blurs the adult and child boundaries. She Investigates menacing themes with a bizarre humour and naive aesthetic. Humans relationship to the environment is a strong theme throughout her work, communicated through magical and transformative experiences.

“My intent as an artist firstly is to entertain people, pull them out perhaps for a moment from the mundane of the everyday to play with other ways of being. To tickle and seduce the viewer’s inner child then deliver some darker concepts or narrative on the human condition/experience but with the notion that change and living in alternative systems is possible and can bring light and hope. I make this work for myself for this reason, to constantly perhaps remind myself that anything is possible and that imagination is an absolute free space. My creative process is a constant maddening flurry of ideas Inspired by random internal and external sources that I must scribble in sketchbooks, then an idea will take hold and repeat itself and then on some unknown intuition I must make it”
