Stephanie Chen is a Melbourne-based dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) performer, educator and cultural promoter whose work spans the fields of music, academia and public service. She studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she developed a distinctive approach to traditional Chinese music and performance.
She has undertaken Honours and Master’s by Research studies in Criminology, with a focus on international and state crime, and has held roles as an academic sessional teacher and teaching assistant at the university level. Stephanie has also served in the Australian Army Reserve in a military police capacity; her military background has instilled in her strong discipline and a tough resilience.
An experienced presenter of Chinese traditional arts, her programs frequently feature Chinese woodwind instruments, Chinese drumming and elements of martial arts, introducing the richness of Chinese culture to diverse audiences. She is also an outdoor enthusiast and has worked as an outdoor mountaineering leader.
This combination of artistic practice, academic training, military experience and outdoor leadership informs her distinctive voice as a contemporary Chinese–Australian artist.
