SUDO-AUSTRALIAN, MD began during Dr Anei's time as a medical student. Bright-eyed and eager, he entered medical school with the goal of giving back to the community, increasing access to healthcare, and embodying servant leadership. He did not anticipate how isolating that journey would be as one of very few African-Australian medical students in Australia. In lecture theatres and hospital wards, he rarely encountered people who looked like him, leaving him feeling unseen and invisible.
What began as a personal blog became a way for Dr Anei to document his experiences as an African-Australian medical doctor. He captured the challenges, triumphs, and ongoing deliberations of navigating an unfamiliar and often unwelcoming terrain, while offering an honest and reflective perspective.
Today, SUDO-AUSTRALIAN, MD has grown into an organisation dedicated to promoting and sharing the stories of African-Australian doctors. Through storytelling, podcasts, mentorship, bursaries and scholarships, and panel discussions, the organisation seeks to inspire and empower African-Australian youth and people of colour more broadly to pursue careers in medicine.
