Upper Glenelg Landcare covers the area to the north and north-west of Hamilton from Balmoral down to Wennicott Creek and across to the South Australian border with much of the land used for prime agricultural production.
It is part of the Glenelg Hopkins catchment management area with the Glenelg River being the major tributary of the region which is an integral part of the Wimmera-Mallee headworks system that supplies towns and properties across the Western Region.
The Glenelg River rises in the Grampians and flows west through Harrow and then south to Casterton and Dartmoor for over 500 km, making it one of the longest rivers in Victoria. A short stretch of the estuary winds through SA before returning to Victoria to enter the sea at Nelson.
WHAT WE DO
The purpose of the Upper Glenelg Landcare Facilitator position is to work in close partnership with Landcare and community-based natural resource management groups along with schools and other organisations in the area to promote, foster and implement sustainable land management practices.
This is achieved through support for the planning and development of on-ground natural resource management projects, community & group education and building partnerships with the other stakeholders in the region.
In undertaking all of these projects the Group aims to deliver better environmental outcomes for their Catchment, through taking a co-ordinated approach in caring for their land which ensures sustainability for generations to come.
