The Walliabup Wildlife Warriors (WWW) formed in response to escalating turtle declines across Perth
wetlands, including the widely reported mass predation events at Bibra Lake — first
highlighted in 2019, when researchers warned native turtles faced potential wipe‑out due to
relentless fox predation, and again in 2024, when more than 100 aestivating turtles were
killed after foxes accessed the dry lakebed during extreme heat and drought conditions.
These events demonstrated the urgent need for coordinated, evidence‑based conservation
action.
WWW was established to advocate across all levels of government for targeted, measurable
turtle‑protection strategies addressing fox predation, habitat loss, and road‑strike mortality.
The group now works collaboratively with Friends groups and community organisations from
Yellagonga to Albany, supporting wetlands across Western Australia through training, data
collection, community engagement, and development of structured turtle‑tracking programs
such as the Blue Gum Turtle Trackers.
