Wasabi is a vibrant community choir based in Queenstown, uniting people from all walks of life through the shared joy of singing.
Founded in 2015 to help younger generations of Japanese New Zealanders stay connected to their cultural roots, Wasabi has grown into a warm, multicultural choir open to singers of every nationality who love harmony and heart.
Under the inspiring direction of Meg Hirata—whose radiant energy and heartfelt arrangements bring the music to life—the choir’s repertoire spans languages and styles. Around half the songs are in English, with the rest sung in Japanese and occasionally Māori, weaving together elements of pop, folk, and traditional melodies.
At Wasabi, we believe music has the power to uplift, connect, and inspire. Whether in rehearsal or performance, our aim is to create music that touches the soul and brings joy to both singers and audiences alike.
We welcome singers of all abilities who enjoy harmony, can blend with others, and bring a cheerful, positive spirit to the group. To help maintain a balanced sound and commitment, new members are encouraged to attend a few trial sessions before a relaxed audition with Meg.
