The Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute for First Nations gender justice, housed at the Australian National University is a dedicated space for First Nations women, girls and gender-diverse mob to elevate our voices and lived experiences, and to build evidence to influence policy and drive systemic change.
The Institute is a first of its kind—there has never been a national mechanism dedicated to pursuing our rights through research and practice, grounded in our knowledges and lived experiences.
The Institute carries on the legacy of the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s Voices) Project at the Australian Human Rights Commission. The Project has been running since 2017, and has built substantial evidence that shows us that women have the knowledge, lived experience and solutions that are capable of reconstructing the social fabric of our society to one that is more caring and enabling for everyone.
It is through the lens of First Nations women, that the Institute will lead systemic change initiatives with research and practice, to bring about long-term and sustainable change.
