Montsalvat is a significant arts precinct in Melbourne’s North East renowned for its European-inspired dwellings, galleries and studios constructed from materials reclaimed from Melbourne’s early city buildings. Established in the 1930s Montsalvat is a place where art is made and taught as well as exhibited and has been a centre for artists for over 90 years. Montsalvat offers art classes, studio places and short-term residencies to a wide variety of artists, experienced and aspiring.
Montsalvat is proud to be one of six chosen organisations for the Victorian Women’s Public Art Program. As part of this program, the Women of Montsalvat project aims to uncover the untold stories of the women who contributed to the construction, arts practice, and culture of our unique artist community. The stories we uncover will ultimately contribute to the design of a sculpture to sit at the entrance of Montsalvat celebrating our founding women artists.
