How to make Money with an understanding of High School Physics
Event description
Some might say that Applied Mathematicians solve problems, while Pure Mathematicians solve puzzles. In this seminar, I will recount the history of the Newtonian Casino and the problem of predicting the outcome of an inherently deterministic game of chance. How, with help from physics and computer science, various mathematicians have been making money from casinos – predicting the outcome of Roulette. This particular story starts with Poincaré, includes an expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas, and finishes with an online casino engaging me to investigate the behaviour of some of their patrons. The mathematics required does not exceed first year calculus and was explained, in 2012, in one of my most downloaded and least cited papers. This talk will not be recorded, nor will it be available for online attendees.
About the speaker:
Professor Michael Small did his Honours in pure mathematics before joining the non-pure applied side for his PhD.
