How to map your food environment
Event description
How to map your food environment
A two-part learning series for change-makers working to transform food.
Mapping turns complex food system issues into clear, visual stories. In this two-part learning series, we’ll cover how mapping tools help Government change-makers to see patterns and take action from new insights.
Part 1 – Mapping 101 (27th August, 12.30pm-1.30pm)
Where is it hard to access healthy food in your town? Where are cultural grocers missing in your diverse communities? In Part One of ‘How to Map your Food Environment’, we’ll dive into the details of mapping, using a methodology developed and applied by by the North East Public Health Unit (NEPHU) and Sustain, covering 10 of the 12 local government areas that comprise the NEPHU catchment. Using live interactive maps, we’ll discuss the tools and techniques we used to map the food environment of more than 1.5 million Victorians.
Part 2 – Mapping and decision-making (Date TBC)
To make a difference, data needs to be meaningful, actionable and place-specific. In Part Two of ‘How to Map your Food Environment’, we’ll demonstrate how councils and communities can use mapping data to spotlight inequities and guide local solutions. Working with Hume City council as a case study, we’ll explore how mapping informs decision making from municipal markets to Minister’s briefings.
