Event description

Step into the fascinating world of the early space race with Lynne Bates and Heather Milhench, who were once described as 'human computers’.

In the early 1960’s they were part of a small team of young women working in the Satellite Centre at the Weapons Research Establishment, near Salisbury, tracking satellites as they passed over Australia. Their official role was as a computing assistant, but they were known as “computers”.

Join us for this special in-conversation event as Heather and Lynne share their stories and insights with Kerrie Dougherty OAM, from the Australian Space Agency, recalling the part they played during a pivotal period in history.
