Description

Claim Your Rights: Human Rights Day 2026

Join B-HART for a free community event about your human rights. Learn about making choices, taking part in decisions and asking for what you need.

You can come to Prospect Library or watch the event live on YouTube. Free tickets are available for both options.

This event is for people with disability. Families, friends, carers, support workers, advocates and anyone interested in human rights are welcome.

You do not need to know about human rights before you come. We will share stories and practical information about rights in everyday life.

The How to Claim Your Human Rights initiative is proudly funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. This event is part of that project.

Prospect Library is fully accessible and has accessible toilets. We are developing an access guide to help you plan your visit.

The guide will show how to access the event.

We are also planning the following supports. These arrangements are confirmed:

  • accessible stage access

  • live captions, which show spoken words as text on a screen

  • Auslan interpreters, who use Australian Sign Language

  • Easy Read event information

Tell us what would help you take part when you book. You can include communication, access or food requirements.

You can also contact B-HART about access or booking. You can ask questions before you book.

Watching online

The event will be streamed live on YouTube. This means you can watch online as the event happens.

You can book a free ticket to watch online. You do not need to come to the library.

What you can do at the event

You can:

  • hear people with disability share their experiences

  • learn about your rights in everyday situations

  • hear ideas about making choices and speaking up

  • see tools and videos that can help you understand and use your rights

  • see a demonstration of B-HART’s new online platform

  • meet other people and the organisations involved in the project.

The online platform is being developed as a place to find information and tools about your rights. We will show how it works at the event.

Invited speakers will talk about human rights. People with disability and project partners will discuss everyday experiences, such as making decisions, asking for information you can understand and speaking up.

We will also show the new B-HART platform and project resources. This will introduce the practical information and tools being developed.

Our project partners

About the project

B-HART leads the How to Claim Your Human Rights project with six partner organisations. People with disability help create the resources by sharing their experiences and ideas.

The project is developing information and tools to help people understand their rights and take action. These include examples of everyday situations and words people can use when asking for what they need.

The event will also introduce the Every Right Counts awareness campaign. You may see it written online as #EveryRightCounts.
