Human Rights Violations of the Amhara people in Ethiopia

Join us to shine a light on the ongoing human rights crisis affecting the Amhara people of Ethiopia.

On March 24 each year, International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed. On this important day, ACHRE and CHRE in collaboration with other human rights institutions would like to shed light on the human rights conditions of the Amhara people of Ethiopia.

The Amhara region of Ethiopia has been under a state of emergency since 2022. Although access for journalists and independent human rights investigators has been heavily restricted by the federal government, the limited reports that do emerge indicate widespread violations of human rights, including mass rape of women and girls, extrajudicial killings, jailing of Amhara journalists and activists, targeted killings of Orthodox Tewahido believers, denial of education, health and other services, and large-scale displacement. The increasing use of drones has intensified civilian casualties, as these strikes have repeatedly targeted homes, schools, and other civilian infrastructure. Despite this, Ethiopia, and specifically the human rights situation in Amhara, has largely fallen off the agenda of global and regional actors.
