Human wellbeing: A narrative shift from sustainable business to regenerative business

The planetary boundaries framework identifies nine boundaries critical for maintaining the stability and resilience of the earth system within a safe operating space for humanity. A team of international scientists recently concluded that at least six of the nine planetary boundaries have been transgressed. Recent research by UWA researcher Malcolm McCulloch and others reveals that the critical temperature threshold of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels - noted in the Paris agreement – has already been exceeded.

A strong connection between the health of the planet and the health of humanity, as well as the role of business in this regard has been recognised. A crucial question to ask therefore at this time, is whether the current narrative about sustainability – in business and beyond - is helpful and forward-thinking enough to avert not only environmental catastrophe, but to maintain human wellbeing?

    Presenter

Associate Professor Dave Webb received his PhD degree from the University of Wales in 1995. In 1997 he moved to UWA where he commenced introducing courses in sustainable business. To support UWA’s and UWA Business School’s commitment to sustainability, in 2013 Dave initiated UWA Business School’s membership of the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), and in 2016, UWA’s partnership of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). Interested in the relationship between business, the environment and individual wellbeing, much of Dave’s current work sits under the broader umbrella of regenerative business and planetary health. He has published extensively on ethical, prosocial and pro-environmental topics, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Macromarketing, Associate Editor of Challenges and an individual member of the Planetary Health Alliance.
