Can Impact Investing Save the World?

With Danny Almagor, Founder of Small Giants

What happens in our economy is it's driven by where people choose to put their money. Our investments today define the future, and so where we invest makes all the difference. If we invest in a new coal mine, we will continue to exacerbate global warming, but if we invest in renewable energy (or education, or sustainable agriculture, or appropriate healthcare, or women, etc.), we might just change the world.

In this session, you will learn about impact investing- what it is, what it can do, and what its limitations are.

Hosted by Danny Almagor, founder of Small Giants, a company he started with Berry Liberman (who is also his beloved wife) to effect social and environmental change through business, education and storytelling, and Australia's first B Corporation.

From investments in start-ups and private equity, all the way to larger-scale projects in renewables, green buildings and regenerative agriculture, the Small Giants total portfolio approach proves that impact investing can span all asset classes and achieve both profit and purpose. Together with Berry, Danny also created and chairs the Small Giants Academy, a for purpose entity which houses the education and storytelling arms of Small Giants, which includes Dumbo Feather, Impact Safari and the Mastery of Business and Empathy. Its goal is to inspire wisdom and action for a hopeful future.

He has trained in Aerospace Engineering, Business Administration and outdoor education. He lives in Melbourne, has three kids and loves to read, talk about philosophy, garden, travel, hike, ski and cook.

What is Humming Sessions?

They are monthly lunch-and-learn sessions hosted for our team and our clients’ teams we all hum together even greater! It is hosted by Sponge over Zoom on the last Thursday of each month (excluding holidays), and we bring in an amazing guest speaker (like Danny!) to facilitate an important topic.

The Cost 

Free for Sponge clients! You will have been sent a code to use at the checkout to make it so. Non-clients are welcome to attend by purchasing a ticket at the advertised price.

All funds generated through ticket sales are donated to our current Double the Goodness grant recipients. At present there are three:

Detour House Inc, a wonderful organisation that provides accommodation and care to women and girls in the heart of Sydney through two services – Detour House and The Girls Refuge.

Ocean Mind, a Victorian surf coast-based organisation, provides evidence-based therapeutic surf programs for young people with mental health issues, social isolation and disabilities.

Scriibed, an early-stage, female-founded business providing professional transcription and engaging vulnerable women in safe, secure, and flexible employment, wrap-around supports, and partnered programs.
