Join us for this fundraiser screening of 'A Thousand Girls Like Me' by award-winning Sahra Mani, a powerful documentary film that tells the story of 23-year-old Khatera as she seeks justice for years of abuse at the hands of her father. Following the screening, we will speak with Sahra about her film and her experiences since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan last year. There will be traditional Afghan refreshments upon arrival.
Hunar Symposia are a volunteer-led and run collaboration of artists and academics. Sales from tickets will help Hunar continue the important work of amplifying marginalized voices through the arts.
About the film:
The film begins in 2014 when, appearing on a national television show, Khatera publicly accuses her father of abuse. We follow Khatera during months of hardship as she takes on her community, family, and the justice system in Afghanistan. Despite the pressures, she is far from being dissuaded. Khatera intensifies her efforts and teams up with Nahid, an attorney who makes a stronger case, based on a DNA test proving that Khatera’s children are her siblings too. Nahid begins a court case that breaks legal ground.
