An evening of conversation, film and Hungarian hospitality
Join us at the Penthouse Cinema as we begin three days of events in Wellington commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight.
The evening opens with Hungarian nibbles and wine, followed by a panel discussion reflecting on the meaning and legacy of 1956 – revolution, freedom, resistance, displacement and the experience of starting again in a new country.

Moderator: Zsófia Hellyer
The discussion will be followed by a screening of the acclaimed Hungarian film Children of Glory (Szabadság, szerelem), set against the dramatic events of the 1956 Revolution and the Melbourne Olympic Games.
The film is in Hungarian with English subtitles.
Come for the whole evening or choose the parts of the programme you would like to attend.
Everyone is welcome – you don't need to be Hungarian or have any prior knowledge of the 1956 Revolution.

Friday 23 October – Hungarian Pilgrimage
5.00–6.00 pm
Join us on foot as we visit places in central Wellington connected with the story of the Hungarian refugees who came to New Zealand after the Revolution, concluding at the Hungarian Garden.
Saturday 24 October – Official Commemoration
From 2.00 pm | Hungarian Garden
Bell tolling, speeches, wreath-laying and the unveiling of new engraved pavers, followed by Hungarian hospitality.

Not at all. Everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge is required.
