Description
This interactive workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the research funding landscape for Early and Mid Career Researchers working in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS). Understanding the full spectrum of funding opportunities is critical for building a sustainable research career, developing pilot projects, and forming strategic collaborations.
Participants will be guided through the major categories of research funding available in the Australian context, with an emphasis on Categories 2 and 3 — including state government schemes, philanthropic foundations, and industry-linked opportunities that are often more accessible and flexible than traditional Category 1 programs. We will also provide an overview of selected European fellowship schemes that support mobility and international collaboration for HASS researchers, such as the European Research Council, Starting grants and Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions postdoctoral fellowships.
In addition to mapping the funding landscape, the workshop will offer insights into how to align your project ideas with the strategic objectives and assessment criteria of different funding bodies. Participants will have the opportunity to practise drafting the opening sections of a funding application and writing a clear, compelling project summary. The workshop will also provide guidance on framing research value, identifying fit, and effectively communicating impact and benefit for the funder.
Whether you are seeking support for a pilot study, a partnership engagement initiative, or international collaboration, this session will equip you with the tools to start identifying, prioritising, and pursuing the right funding opportunities for your work.
