Identifying Rainforest Plants of the Blackall Range: the Rainforest Myrtles
Event description
Rose Myrtle, Silky Myrtle, Plum Myrtle, Cinnamon Myrtle, and others, are shrubs and small trees found in our rainforests, belonging to the family Myrtaceae. They include endangered plants such as Gossia inophloia and Rhodomyrtus psidioides, and many have been significantly affected by Myrtle Rust, which arrived on the range in 2011. They are beautiful shrubs and trees with colourful berries, bark, and gorgeous flowers. Many have been planted along the Maleny trail in the regeneration areas.
So, what makes them different from other Myrtaceae species? Join Hilary Pearl and Rowena Thomas at the Barung Nursery for a two-hour workshop learning the myrtle species of our local Blackall Range forests, plus some others you may encounter across the broader Sunshine Coast. We recommend you bring a pen, a torch (or a phone with a torch), and your own eye lens if you have one. Magnifying lenses and eye lenses will be available to use, and worksheets will be supplied as we delve deep into this group of oil-dot rich shrubs and trees.
Participation is limited to 15 places so please book in to attend!
