Event description

Asthma is the leading burden of disease in Australian children and traffic emissions are a key causative factor. Idling can contribute up to 34% of vehicle pollution and has been demonstrated to create traffic pollution ‘hot spots’ around schools. Evidence suggests that leaving your car idling for 10 seconds next to a child is tantamount to smoking 1 cigarette next to a child. Studies also show vehicle emissions can affect the entire body, contributing to heart and lung disease, asthma, cancer and even cognitive disorders. By establishing anti-idling zones around schools and childcare centres, Idle Off will reduce pollution in these hotspots, protecting young lungs. The Idle Off research project explores practical strategies to reduce idling with a focus on school zones. By working with educators, families and local council, we aim to shift behaviours, raise awareness and co-create healthier environments for young people.
