Event description

It’s like talking to a brick wall; a one-way conversation that goes nowhere and gives nothing back.

As Melburnians, we know better. Join visual culture researcher, Dr Sabina Andron and graffiti removal expert Adrian Tanner for a walking tour of Brunswick where they’ll share their experience of reading, cleaning, and managing public walls.

Discover just how much our cities are trying to speak to us, if we only stop and listen.

What to expect:

A 75-minute walking tour of the Brunswick area.

A small group with plenty of opportunities for discussion and questions.

While every effort will be made to accommodate mobility levels, please note the tour will involve approximately 3km of walking outside, including across uneven surfaces.

Your tour guides:

Dr Sabina Andron poses in front of a graffitied red corrugated iron wall. She has short wavy dark hair, fair skin and blue eyes.

Dr Sabina Andron is a cities scholar working on urban visual culture, and public signage at the Melbourne Centre for Cities. Her book, Urban surfaces, graffiti, and the right to the city (Routledge 2023) is an exploration of the fascinating, yet often overlooked cultures of public walls. She is a Brunswick resident and lover of Melbourne’s laneways.

Adrian stands in an urban setting. He’s young, Asian, has bright pink short hair, and wears hi vis clothes that have visible paint marks.

Adrian Tanner is a specialist graffiti removal technician, currently working in the local Brunswick and Coburg areas. His efforts revolve around open space cleansing and asset preservation. His approach ranges from subtle maintenance to impactful improvisation – all in the name of civic responsibility.
