Event description

Ever wondered what Illawarra Lowlands Grassy Woodland (ILGW) is?

The Illawarra Lowlands Grassy Woodland is a Critically Endangered Ecological Community and one of the rapidly declining peri-urban woodlands in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region.

The endangered Lowlands Grassy Woodland is dominated by the majestic Forest Red Gum and extends in small patches from Corrimal in the north down to Kiola in the south. Small patches exist in Kangaroo Valley, South Nowra, Yatte Yattah, Little Forest, Pointer Mountain, Milton, Bawley Point and Kiola. Historically these woodlands have been cleared for timber, agriculture, grazing and housing, now only 12% remains.

We have invited Jeff Harbrow from Whipbird Environmental to come and teach us more about this fascinating local endangered vegetation community. Jeff will share his knowledge on where in the Shoalhaven we still have some remnants of ILGW. He will provide some information on the variety of native species you can find there and some insight into some of the ways we can help restore this endangered vegetation community.

Our half day workshop will get started for a talk in Lake Conjola Community Hall. After some light refreshments, we will drive out to have a walk around some local properties to see some examples of Illawarra Lowlands Grassy Woodland (ILGW).

Please bring a hat, water bottle, long sleeves and closed in shoes.

The Save our Species (SoS) Guardians of the Grassy Woodlands project can support private landholders to protect Lowlands Grassy Woodlands on their land including fauna surveys, pest animal control, weed removal, fencing and planting. Lucy from DCCEEW will provide some information on this at the workshop.
