2026 Immersia | Music Films & Ritual Cinema : VINCENT MOON

Why do we record music — and how can cinema change the way we encounter another culture?

Join NFSA Creative Producer Alice Taylor for a two-part journey through the work of French filmmaker and sound explorer Vincent Moon.

The evening begins with Moon’s own reflections on his evolution from intimate music films to a nomadic cinema devoted to performance, ceremony and sacred sound.

We then travel across Asia through Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam, where experimental musicians transform streets, electronics and everyday spaces into instruments, and where ritual, trance, spirit mediumship and collective devotion reveal the enduring connections between music, culture and community. After a short popcorn break, audiences will continue this immersive journey through distinct sonic and ceremonial worlds rarely encountered on screen.

Presented at Smith’s Alternative for 2026 Immersia, Music Films & Ritual Cinema invites audiences to experience the cultures and traditions of across Asia and the Pacific through an act of close listening — where music, body, place and community continually reshape one another.

Vincent Moon
Vincent Moon is an independent French filmmaker and sound explorer whose work sits between music film, documentary and experimental ethnography. Best known as a co-creator of La Blogothèque’s influential Take Away Shows, he has spent more than two decades travelling the world documenting musicians, rituals, sacred traditions and experimental sound through his ongoing Petites Planètes project.

Alice Taylor
Alice Taylor is a Canberra-based film curator and creative producer at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, where she programs screenings and special events for Arc Cinema. She has worked across documentary, film festivals and screen culture for more than two decades, including as Director of the Canberra International Film Festival and founder of Elsie’s Film House.

Rafael Florez / Clandestino Canberra
Rafael Florez is a Canberra-based cultural producer, DJ, percussionist and multimedia practitioner with a long involvement in the city’s multicultural music and arts community. Through projects including Clandestino Canberra, Radio Clandestino and a range of festivals, concerts and community collaborations, his work brings together global music, film, cultural storytelling and live performance.
