Impact Analysis for Researchers Full-Day Workshop

Join this free one-day professional development workshop to build your understanding of impact analysis and explore practical tools that can support robust impact claims and impact narratives.

Impact analysis helps researchers understand the connections between research activities, outcomes and impacts, and how change occurs within complex real-world contexts. Developing these skills is increasingly important for research planning, evaluation, stakeholder engagement and demonstrating research value. As expectations grow around evidencing research impact in funding applications, institutional reporting and public accountability, researchers are increasingly being asked to articulate not only what their research achieved, but how change occurred and why it matters.

Through a combination of presentations, discussion and practical examples over the day, participants will:

• Explore what research impact means and how it is defined.

• Learn about an ecosystem approach for a pathway to impact.

• Understand how to describe and evidence impact effectively.

• Review examples of both mini and maxi impact assessments.

• Gain an overview of tools and approaches used to measure and analyse impact.

The workshop will also introduce participants to a suite of tools and resources that can support impact planning, assessment and narrative development, such as the Global Impact Analytics Framework (GIAF).

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for University of Canberra researchers across all career stages who are interested in impact analysis and strengthening their ability to articulate, evidence and evaluate research impact. HDR candidates and professional staff supporting research impact may also find it valuable.

Places are limited to ensure opportunities for discussion, collaborative learning and engagement throughout the day. Registration is essential.

These Health Research Institute (HRI) researchers have designed, delivered and evaluated implementation projects and programs across a range of contexts. The Global Impact Analytics Framework (GIAF) emerged from this work and has been applied over 13 years in more than 30 projects across 10 countries.

While developed through health research, the framework's underlying principles are relevant across disciplines. The core questions remain the same: how has research been implemented in real-world contexts, how effective has it been, and what change has resulted? Similar questions underpin theories of change and program logic models, making the framework relevant to researchers working in fields including education, business, public policy, sustainability, law and the creative arts.

Kailey Tonini, from Research Services, will share best-practice approaches to developing high-quality UC impact narratives and discuss how the process of articulating impact can strengthen the planning, design and delivery of research that generates meaningful change.
