    Overview

    Social Impact Hub and Philanthropy Australia present: Impact Investing for Not For Profits, a short course providing NFPs with the knowledge and skills to understand and navigate this emerging field. Over one day, we will provide attendees with the tools and resources to identify opportunities to engage with impact investing, how it fits (or doesn't fit!) within your current operating model and ways to navigate the impact investing landscape.

    Who is this for?

    This course is recommended for leadership, finance or strategy staff as well as board members and advisors of not-for-profits, charities, NGOs and for-purpose organisations.

    About the course

    Impact investing is rapidly growing with the global impact investment market sized at $715 billion in 2020 (Global Impact Investing Network). It can provide not-for-profit organisations with an opportunity to diversify revenue streams and a new way to amplify organisational impact.  However, it is a confusing landscape to navigate: Is impact investment right for you? What are the key considerations in determining which path to pursue?

    The Impact Investing Course for Not-for-Profits will help answer these questions and more.

    Facilitated by Jessica Mendoza-Roth, you will have the opportunity to learn about the variety of impact investing options available through case studies and experienced presenters.

    The course will cover different ways to diversify your revenue streams through impact investment including:

    • Setting up a social enterprise
    • Raising debt to scale
    • Developing a social impact bond
    • Raising external capital to invest

    Educational philosophy

    The Social Impact Hub's educational content is all focused on catalysing and enhancing social impact. It achieves this through utilising our unique insight and knowledge base drawn from cutting-edge research and evidence, the expertise of our Professional Impact Network, and informed by on-the-ground program and service delivery. This interactive course will also provide a practical learning experience using real-world case studies to explore the world of impact investing. There will also be the opportunity for peer learning from fellow participants.

    Lead Facilitator

    Jessica Mendoza-Roth | Founder & CEO at Social Impact Hub

    Jessica is the Founder and CEO of the Social Impact Hub. The Social Impact Hub advises, educates, collaborates and mobilises capital for impact. Jessica is also a consultant to the impact investment sector, having served as the Impact Strategist for Blue River Group, an independent impact investment services firm, and opened the Sydney office of Impact Investment Group. Previously, Jessica was a Solicitor at King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney. She holds a B.A. and LL.B. (with First Class Honours) from UNSW and a LL.M. from Harvard Law School, where she was the recipient of the R.G. Menzies Scholarship to Harvard, and she studied social entrepreneurship, philanthropy and impact investing.

    Speakers

    Dr Tom McClean | Research and Social Policy Program Head at Uniting

    Tom is an experienced professional in the investment and social policy and evaluation space. He worked in NSW State Government in Parliament and Cabinet and the NSW Ombudsman with a focus on social policy and evaluation. He has been at Uniting for 7 years leading research and social policy programs. He is involved across a range of initiatives at Uniting including Foyer Central, an initiative providing apartment-style accommodation that's purpose-built to provide a safe and centrally located living option for young people with a lived history of out-of-home care. Tom also worked for a private equity firm in London and as an academic at the London School of Economics. Sam will be talking about Uniting's experience with impact investment with a focus on how Not for Profits can prepare to take on investment.     Samuel Sgambellone | Head of ForPurposeCo.

    Sam is the Head of For Purpose Co. He is an experienced entrepreneur and director with a strong food and beverage background. Sam is committed to solving problems through social enterprise and innovative business models. Before moving into the impact sector, Sam spent 13 years mostly dedicated to the specialty coffee industry; as a partner in Mecca Coffee Roasters, as they went from one cafe to a multi venue operation with a wholesale roasting division, a founder and lead educator at  Coffee Kaizen, who delivered coffee educating and consulting then finally on to State Manager of Veneziano Coffee Roasters. Sam will be sharing the story and experience of ForPurposeCo., which is a profit-for-purpose social enterprise with people, planet and purpose at its heart. As an innovative and entrepreneurial business focused on food and waste technology, ForPurposeCo exists to enhance the mission of OzHarvest, create sustainable revenue streams and increase its positive impact.

    Tiphanie Au and Lisa Minchella | NSW Office of Social Impact Investment

    Tiphanie and Lisa will be joining this course to talk about NSW Government policy in relation to social impact investment and explore social impact bonds and other forms of impact investment. Tiphanie is an impact investment professional with over 10 years of experience in the NSW public sector. As the Associate Director for the Office of Social Impact Investment, her aspiration is to drive positive change with measurable impacts and contribute towards a more inclusive and resilient society. She specialises in the intersection of delivering outcomes-focused, innovative, early-intervention programs aimed at tackling complex social issues, while ensuring commercial rigour in investments and procurement decision-making. She is a ‘tri-sector’ leader that is technically adept and has extensive experience collaborating across the public, for purpose and for-profit sectors to achieve social impact. Lisa is a policy professional with over 5 years experience working across a diverse range of policy areas in the NSW Public Sector. Her passion is working towards social impact, including fostering partnerships across the public, for purpose and for profit sectors to test new approaches for addressing complex social problems.
