Tue, 6 May, 3pm - 4pm AEST

Event description

The conventional divide between investment on the one hand, and philanthropy on the other, is looking increasingly inadequate to dealing with the complex challenges facing Western Australia.

Impact investment offers the intriguing possibility of blending the best of both worlds: reasonable risk-adjusted financial returns on investment, plus the achievement of measurable social and environmental goals.

New ways of thinking about whether and how WA’s substantial accumulations of private capital – derived in large part from mineral wealth – can best contribute to addressing Aboriginal empowerment, climate change, housing availability and other systemic transformations.

This webinar will explore the capital landscape in WA, including specific case studies from Impact Seed’s own loan fund, illustrating the potential of impact investment to reconcile financial and social goals.

Presenter

Chuck Berger leads Impact Seed’s social enterprise capacity building and impact investment work, joining social entrepreneurs with the expert advice, relationships and access to capital needed to optimise their operations and growth plans.

He has a diverse career spanning three decades of experience in private corporate law, not-for-profit strategy and executive leadership, and government leadership roles. He has served as Chair of Community Legal WA and has held other Board positions including with the Australian Consumers Association and the National Association of Community Legal Centres.

Prior to joining Impact Seed, Chuck was CEO of the Kimberley Development Commission, where he secured over $25m in resourcing for projects in areas of youth wellbeing, housing, disaster response, and town revitalization, as well as leading research and community engagement efforts aligned to Aboriginal empowerment and regional development goals.

He has also led not-for-profits Kimberley Community Legal Services and Outdoors Victoria, and served for a decade as the Australian Conservation Foundation’s in-house counsel and then Strategic Director.
