About the Event

ANATS QLD is pleased to present a webinar with Dr Brian Manternach (USA), exploring how teachers can best nurture their students and build a respectful, productive and kind teacher–student relationship, one focused on the student working toward sustainable growth rather than the teacher simply displaying expertise. Brian will discuss how teachers can support a student-led, independent learner approach to learning singing, including how feedback and encouragement shape a student's development.

His book, Voices of Influence (Bloomsbury, 2025), examines the dynamic relationship of influence between teacher and student in the voice studio. Relating personal stories and formative experiences, the book is part pedagogical guide, part memoir, and part exploration of how vocal philosophies and practices evolve as they are passed from teacher to student.

His work exemplifies the idea that how we teach is just as important as what we teach. He examines a variety of pedagogical techniques and philosophical ideas, inviting teachers to reflect on which practices to carry forward, which may need to evolve to serve today's students, and how to support singers as they become curious, informed and independent singers, teachers, and people.

Dr Manternach is an associate professor in the University of Utah Department of Theatre and a research associate at the Utah Center for Vocology, where he is on the faculty of the Summer Vocology Institute. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Singing and a columnist for Classical Singer magazine.
