Implementing Effective Primary Maths Instruction
Description
Implementing Effective Primary Maths Instruction
Online course for school and middle leaders
What
You might have an idea as to what effective maths instruction should look like and even run some PL for staff, but the challenge is putting it into practice across classrooms.
Across two highly practical online days Brendan Lee will guide school and middle leaders through the process of implementing effective maths instruction with clarity and confidence.
The course explores how learning happens for adults, the stages of the Instructional Hierarchy and how this connects to curriculum and lesson design. Participants will examine what MTSS looks like for maths, how to support teachers to intellectually prepare and use tools to guide lesson planning and measure impact.
Leaders will also look at contextual challenges such as leading improvement in small schools, providing intervention, supporting extension tasks and streamed vs unstreamed classes.
By the end of the course participants will have a practical framework, ready-to-use tools and a clear plan to help teachers move from knowing what works to doing what works.
How
Spaced over two full days, this highly interactive course blends evidence, practical tools and collaborative conversations.
Participants will receive a downloadable workbook and a set of leadership tools to assess where their school is currently at and plan next steps for sustainable improvement.
By the end of each day, participants will leave with an actionable implementation plan and strategies they can put into practice immediately.
Who
For school leaders, assistant principals, instructional coaches and middle leaders responsible for leading maths improvement and supporting teachers to embed evidence-informed practice.
Participants should be familiar with the Instructional Hierarchy and principles of how learning happens in maths (ideally, teachers have completed PL with Brendan previously).

About Brendan
Brendan Lee is a seasoned primary school leader and educational consultant based in NSW, dedicated to bridging the gap between educational research and classroom practice. His passion for improving education was sparked when he delved into research and realised the challenge teachers face in accessing clear, actionable insights—especially in teaching maths. While the science of reading was well-documented, the path to effective maths instruction was less defined. Determined to address this, Brendan embarked on a journey to uncover the science of maths, discovering key principles that can transform teaching practices.
Now, Brendan shares his findings to save other educators the time and effort of combing through research. He has collaborated with organisations such as AERO, Grattan Institute and Think Forward Educators. Brendan is also on the Board for Ochre Education. He travels across the country offering professional learning for teachers, writing insightful articles on his blog Learn with Lee (learnwithlee.net), and hosting the Knowledge for Teachers Podcast, where he continues to champion evidence-based education.
