Join our expert teachers and presenters, Majella Wessel, Kay Bishop, and Julie Davis, as they outline the key features of the new Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) 9.0 and share a range of practical strategies and resources designed to help set your students up for success in HASS!
This session will include:
- a concise overview of the key changes to the structure and content of the Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences 9.0 Years 7–10
- practical tips and advice for implementing the new curriculum, including timetabling four compulsory subjects in Years 7 and 8 in an already crowded curriculum
- strategies for closing the knowledge and skills gap and personalising learning for students in mixed-ability classrooms
- integrating the histories and cultures of First Nations peoples in HASS subjects
- a demonstration of the features and digital resources offered in Oxford’s fully revised and updated edition of Oxford HASS 7–10 Australian Curriculum (including a range of integrated STEAM projects at each year level that enable consistent, hassle-free, cross-curricular learning across maths, science and HASS).

Meet the authors and presenters
Majella Wessel
Head of Humanities, MacGregor State High School
Majella is a History, Geography and Economics teacher, with over 15 years’ experience. Having taught in both government and non-government schools, she has a passion for developing curriculum and engaging learning experiences for both junior and senior secondary students. Currently the Head of Humanities at MacGregor State High School, she enjoys mentoring beginner teachers and strongly advocates for all the disciplines within the humanities curriculum area.
Kay Bishop
Senior Education Officer, Education Queensland; Patron, Queensland History Teachers’ Association
After many years as a teacher of modern and ancient history, geography, English and legal studies, Kay is now a Senior Education Officer with Education Queensland, where she works in curriculum development.
Kay was President of the Queensland History Teachers’ Association on multiple occasions and President of the History Teachers’ Association of Australia. As a member of the History Syllabus Sub-Committee for the Queensland Board of Senior secondary School Studies (now QCAA), and Chair for many years, Kay has worked closely with teachers to develop best-practice approaches to history teaching. Kay is the author of several ancient history texts, including the Breakdown of the Roman Republic and Augustus. She is committed to assisting teachers in developing a range of pedagogies to engage students and encourage their skills in the process of historical inquiry.
Julie Davis
Board Member, Australian Geography Teachers Association; Co-Chair, Australian Geography Competition
Julie Davis taught geography in Queensland Government and independent schools for 20 years, as a teacher and Head of Department. She has also taught in the School of Education at the Queensland University of Technology in both geography and curriculum. Julie is the immediate past president of the Geography Teachers Association of Queensland and has been the editor of the Association’s journal for the past seven years. As Co-Chair of the Australian Geography Competition, Julie works with a dedicated committee to bring the competition to 70 000 students every year. She is passionate about geography and geography education and has presented at many conferences over her career.
