Implementing the Australian Curriculum Science (9.0) in Queensland: Challenges and opportunities

Join expert teachers Helen Silvester and Natalie Quinn, as they outline the key features of the new Australian Curriculum: Science 9.0 Years 7–10 and share a range of practical strategies and resources designed to help set your students up for success in secondary science! 

This session will include: 

• a concise overview of the key changes to the structure and content of the Australian Curriculum: Science 9.0 across Years 7–10 
• practical tips and advice for planning and implementing the new curriculum 
• a range of strategies for closing knowledge and skills gaps and personalising learning for students in mixed-ability classrooms 
• respectfully integrating First Nations histories and cultures in the science classroom 
• a demonstration of the features and digital resources offered in Oxford’s fully revised and updated edition of Oxford Science 7–10 Australian Curriculum (including a range of integrated STEAM projects at each year level that enable consistent, hassle-free, cross-curricular learning across maths, science and HASS).

Meet the author and presenters

Helen Silvester
Director, Casey Tech School 

Helen Silvester has been an educator for over 20 years and has held Head of Science positions in a variety of state and independent schools. In 2014 and 2017, she was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Secondary Science Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools. 

Helen has a wealth of experience writing and reviewing and has been an active participant in the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA), Australian School Science Information Support for Teachers and Technicians (ASSIST) and Science Teachers Association Victoria (STAV).  

Currently Helen is Director at Casey Tech School, a shared learning facility that delivers high-tech, leading-edge courses and innovative, real-world education programs to students in partnership with local industries and community groups. Programs emphasise the vital Enterprise and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) skills needed for the 21st century. 

Natalie Quinn
Biology Coordinator, Brisbane State High School 

Natalie Quinn began her career in Science after completing a Bachelor of Science with majors in ecology and entomology at the University of Queensland. Natalie has taught biology and psychology at a number of schools across Queensland and is a Senior Subject Matter Expert for QCAA.  

She was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Education in Guidance and Counselling with Distinction and has worked in roles such as Dean of Students. Natalie is currently Biology Coordinator at Brisbane State High School.
