Presented by:

Claire Fultz, DSW, MSW, MSC, LCSW-C, CCM, Director of Mental Health, Jewish Community Services

Jewish Community Services is pleased to offer this workshop on implicit bias and microaggressions utilizing curriculum from Project READY: Reimaging Equity & Access for Diverse Youth. This interactive workshop contributes 1.5 category 1 credits towards the anti-oppressive social work practice content described in COMAR 10.42.06.03.A.(1)(d).

Implicit biases are unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that shape our actions, decisions, and perceptions without our awareness. These biases can be positive (a preference or attraction) or negative (a fear, aversion, or discomfort), and they impact how we interact with others. Microaggressions are subtle, often unintended expressions of these biases that can perpetuate discrimination and harm. Recognizing and addressing both implicit biases and microaggressions is essential for fostering inclusive, equitable environments where everyone is and feels valued and respected.

As a result of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Define implicit bias and microaggression and give examples of these concepts in action
  • Explain how implicit biases are formed and the ways in which they impact the lives of people of color
  • Examine their own biases and how they affect oneself and others
