Event description

Not sure about the difference between an overhand loop and a bow line? A cats paw and a cow hitch? Or even just a reef knot or a granny knot?

Knowing how to tie a good knot is an important life skill, whether you need to secure a load to the back of your ute, or you're off camping for a long weekend, have plans to adventure on the high seas or just need to tie your shoelaces.

We’ll help you tighten up your skills and tie up the loose ends in your knotting knowledge. No experience necessary!

What will we cover?

In this hands-on workshop we'll be learning about some of the most useful knots, including:

  • How and when to tie and untie knots such as:
  • granny knot and reef (square) knot
  • half hitch and clove hitch
  • cow hitch and cat’s paw
  • overhand loop and bowline

Before the class is up you might even find out that you’ve been tying your shoes wrong all this time!

What to bring?

  • All rope provided

Who will be teaching?

Clare (she/her) is a bit outdoorsy and in the past has crewed on boats such as the Melbourne’s Tall Ship, Enterprize, working as a deck hand on luxury yachts and catamarans. The old saying is that “If you don’t know knots, tie lots” which is one strategy but she believes you should have a few others to choose from. At least be able to name and practice a few different knots, it can help while away the time (on long ocean going journeys) and also be used for decoration like tying up presents.
