Details

Children and young people in out-of-home care are over-represented in the NSW juvenile justice system and nationally.  It is important that we find ways to support these children and young people and divert them from more serious criminal justice involvement.

This FACSIAR and Youth Justice Lunch and Learn webinar will present a summary of the evidence and literature that can inform policy and practice in this field and will showcase a pilot study and some existing programs that target this vulnerable cohort.

Program

  • Introduction and Acknowledgement of Country, by Stuart Malcher, Acting Executive Director, FACSIAR
  • Literature to inform policy and practice for children and young people in out-of-home care with criminal justice contact, by Dr Kath McFarlane, University of NSW and the Director of Kath McFarlane Consulting. This presentation will provide insights into recent Australian and international research that has examined the cross-over between the out-of-home care and youth justice systems.
  • Pilot and implications of single session family work intervention for at risk young people and their families by Professor Chris Trotter from Monash University and Dr Phillipa Evans from University of NSW.  This is a discussion of a pilot of single session family work intervention for at-risk young people and their families being undertaken in regional NSW, along with some considerations about using multi-agency approach to strengthen delivery.
  • The Crossover Kids – who are they and how to best support them. A joint initiative between Youth Justice and Community Services Sydney, South Eastern Sydney, Northern Sydney (SSESNS) by Jordan White, Youth Justice Project Officer (Practice) which will highlight the trajectory and characteristics of young people who are, or have a high probability of being dual clients of Community Services (Out-of-home care & Child Protection) and Youth Justice. This is a cohort whose needs typically differ from the services offered by Out-of-home care & Child Protection or Youth Justice services alone and this presentation will offer practice insights for working towards better outcomes for these young people.”
