In conversation with author Rachel Nightingale
Event description
Local author Rachel Nightingale will join us for an afternoon at Emporium Creative Hub to launch her new title Raluana Lane. This deeply personal family story will form the basis of a casual in person discussion with Rachel with the opportunity for a Q+A followed by a light afternoon tea.
About Raluana Lane:
In 1936 young teacher Eileen Brabin takes up a post with the Methodist Mission in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. Eileen quickly feels at home in the islands, despite a volcano eruption and the unwanted attentions of an unsuitable young man. During her time in Rabaul, Eileen grows close to widower Wilf Pearce, the Mission business manager and her future husband, but in 1941, a Japanese invasion threatens them all.
The Australian government orders the evacuation of all women and children and Eileen, eight and a half months pregnant, must farewell her husband Wilf and spend Christmas at sea. In the years to come, the suffering and uncertainty brought by war will have lasting repercussions on the lives of all who leave Rabaul, and all who remained behind.
Based on a true story, Raluana Lane includes never-before-seen letters from Wilf Pearce detailing life in Rabaul in the lead up to the 1941 invasion.
