In conversation with Chanel Contos from Teach Us Consent
Event description
Let's chat with Chanel Contos, founder of Teach Us Consent who is tackling how Australia responds to sexual violence and provides consent education. Participation for this event will remain anonymous.
ABOUT CHANEL Chanel gained global recognition in 2021 after asking young Australian women on Instagram to share their sexual assault experiences. This prompted over 200 responses within 24 hours and led to her founding Teach Us Consent and chairing the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's Youth Advisory Committee. She launched a petition for mandatory consent education in Australian schools, which garnered 45,000 signatures and resulted in unanimous support from education ministers a year later. Her platform, teachusconsent.com, allows anonymous reporting of sexual assault and has received funding to develop consent education materials with Our Watch. Chanel’s efforts have sparked international activism against rape culture, and she now serves as Director of the Centre for Sex and Gender Equality at The Australia Institute. She was awarded the Young People’s Human Rights Medal in 2021 and a Diana Award for activism in 2022.
