Event description

IN CONVERSATION with eX de Medici, an artist of almighty fortitude. eX uses her work as a mirror to society’s insidious ills, using her mastery of the medium to detail and destabilise systems of injustice, abuses of power and violence that exist in our lives.

Bio

eX de Medici was born on Waradgeri land and grew up in Canberra, schooled by the Roman Catholic religious cult and became a radical atheist in Year 10 at St Clares and remains so to the present.

Attended (the then) Canberra School of Art in 1982 (now ANU). In 1985 undertook a year at the Canberra School of Music in the Electronic music department at the (then) Canberra School of Music (now albeit an
extinguished department of the ANU), but learned more from practicing senior professional artists and musicologists. In order to survive and remain an artist, undertook an apprenticeship under Tattooist Kari Barber in Los Angeles in 1989. Upon return to Australia began tattooing in the wildest tattoo shop in the world; Civic, Canberra. At the same time continuing to be deeply engaged with the (then) Bitumen River Artist Collective where she had been an active member since 1982. The collective was subjected to a hostile takeover and became the Canberra Contemporary Art Space.

Ex has exhibited broadly both domestically and internationally. There have been trials and errors as is the natural trajectory of a lifetime as a primary producer within the broader systems that govern and determine the Arts.
