Join us for the QATA Term 4 In the Studio online event with artist Larissa Warren.

 Clay to ceramic 101- for beginner art teachers, teachers considering introducing clay into their art department and also a refresher. 

Larissa Warren is an established ceramicist and art teacher living on Tamborine Mountain. She works from her home studio; a reclaimed underground bunker. Career Highlights include being interviewed for ABC Radio National’s The Arts Show presenting at the 16th Australian Ceramics Triennale winning the Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence and winning the People’s Choice & Special Acquisition for the Clunes Ceramic Award. Warren’s ceramics are available at HOTA, Gold Coast, MCA, Sydney and IMA, Brisbane. When she isn’t making, Warren can be found presenting workshops, curating, researching and writing.

In this workshop, Larissa will discuss

  • selecting different types of clays and what applications to use them in. firing temperature, texture, colour and strength
  • a few basic hand building techniques, pinch pots, coiling, rolling slabs
  • quick tricks to cut clay , ready for a class in 5 mins
  • storage of clay projects
  • how to avoid slumping, breakages and how to repair
  • drying- plenty to discuss here
  • how to prevent warping, breakages and kiln blow ups
  • firing-  stacking, kiln shelves and props, how to maintain, safety, ventilation, setting the controller, including a set of firing schedules
  • glazing- choices are endless, we will discuss as many as we can in the time frame. Purchase vs recipe glazes 
  • glaze or high firing
  • problem solving through question time. Questions like- what kiln should I buy?

Workshop materials:

  • 1-2 kg smooth clay without grog (or whatever you have on hand)
  • ½ cup slip compatible with your clay body (purchased or made)
  • 10 grams of 1 or 2 colours ceramic stains or oxides (optional)
