    Event description

Join us for the QATA Term 1 2024 In the Studio online event. Artist Larissa Warren will continue  Clay to ceramic 101- an event for beginner art teachers, teachers considering introducing clay into their art department and a refresher for experienced teachers.  Part II will focus on kilns and firing processes and include demonstrations. Participants will be able to ask questions.

Larissa Warren is an established ceramicist and art teacher living on Tamborine Mountain. She works from her home studio; a reclaimed underground bunker. Career Highlights include being interviewed for ABC Radio National’s The Arts Show presenting at the 16th Australian Ceramics Triennale winning the Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence and winning the People’s Choice & Special Acquisition for the Clunes Ceramic Award. Warren’s ceramics are available at HOTA, Gold Coast, MCA, Sydney and IMA, Brisbane. When she isn’t making, Warren can be found presenting workshops, curating, researching and writing.

We ran out of time last year as Larissa has so much knowledge to share. We're excited to continue with Part II of this In the Studio event, focusing on kilns and firing processes, trouble-shooting, demonstration of glaze and underglaze application, and plenty of other useful tips for working with clay in the classroom.

Larissa will aim to answer all of your questions. Questions added during registration will be greatly appreciated.

In this workshop, Larissa will discuss

    • how to avoid slumping, breakages and how to repair
    • drying- plenty to discuss here
    • how to prevent warping, breakages and kiln blow ups
    • firing-  stacking, kiln shelves and props, how to maintain, safety, ventilation, setting the controller, including a set of firing schedules
    • glazing- choices are endless, we will discuss as many as we can in the time frame. Purchase vs recipe glazes
    • glaze or high firing
    • considerations for kiln purchases and what you need to know before buying.
