    Ageing and Introduction to Dementia.

    This workshop offers an insightful introduction to ageing and dementia, specifically tailored for families, and carers, to support individuals with Down syndrome.

    Understanding the complexities of ageing, losing skills and Dementia and its impact is crucial for providing compassionate and effective care.

    Key Topics Covered:

    • Down Syndrome and Dementia: Learn about the increased risk and unique challenges of dementia in individuals with Down syndrome.
    • Understanding Dementia: Explore what dementia is, including its types, symptoms, and how it affects individuals differently.
    • Early Signs: Recognize the early signs of dementia and the importance of timely diagnosis and intervention.
    • Emotional Support: Discuss the emotional impact on families and carers and explore available support networks and resources.

    Interactive Discussion:

    Participants will have the opportunity to engage in an open discussion, share experiences, ask questions and discuss other ageing needs and how Down Syndrome NSW can pathe a better way for ageing needs. This interactive session aims to foster a supportive community and provide valuable insights from both experts and peers.

    Speakers:

    Julie Louden

    Julie holds a Certificate in Nursing and has extensive experience in Aged Care, including work in CADE Units, Secure Dementia Units, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Nursing Homes. More recently, Julie has been involved in providing care for the elderly in Home Care settings particularly with elderly with complex behavioural needs and Dementia.

    Julie has received comprehensive education in Dementia Care, regularly attending training programs through Home Instead and Alzheimer's Australia.

    As the mother of a teenage daughter with Down syndrome, Julie is deeply passionate about advocating for individuals with disabilities and supporting their families. Her commitment to empowering voices and creating opportunities drives her work at Down Syndrome NSW.

    Miriam Philomena

    As the Inclusion and Education Manager at Down Syndrome NSW, Miriam Philomena brings almost 20 years of experience as a behavior specialist and a passionate advocate for individuals with Down syndrome.

    Drawing from her background as a social worker and her lived experience as the mother of a thirty-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, Miriam provides invaluable support, guidance, and training workshops on understanding Down syndrome across all life stages. She has extensive knowledge of dementia care, specifically related to Down syndrome, and incorporates this expertise into her training programs. Her comprehensive understanding of the NDIS and planning processes further enhances the Down Syndrome NSW community, empowering families and individuals with the tools they need to navigate complex systems.

    Miriam's dedication to fostering a more inclusive society goes beyond her professional responsibilities. She actively engages with policymakers, educators, and community members to promote understanding, acceptance, and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome. Through her advocacy and commitment to empowerment, Miriam continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of those around her.
